I have an older iMac (2011) that I'd like to setup as a Minecraft server for home usage. I won't make this public - it's just for those in my house to be able to play together w/o having to pay for Realms each month.
I'm running the latest OS X (10.11) and have never installed Java on my iMac. My understanding is that you need to have Java in order to run the server software. With Java being a dumpster fire of security risks I want to make sure I only download and install exactly what I need. What do I need?
Wiki article about setting up a server: here.
The article recommends the following link to install Java: Java for OS X 2015-001 installs the legacy Java 6 runtime for OS X 10.11 El Capitan, OS X 10.10 Yosemite, OS X 10.9 Mavericks, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, and OS X 10.7 Lion.
Or should I download the latest version (Recommended Version 8 Update 73) of Java from java.com?
I don't want anything in the browser to run ANY Java applet this is solely for running a simple Minecraft server at home.. I don't know of Minecraft *requires* the legacy version of Java or not.. I guess that would determine which download I would need.

Java For Os X Legacy 2016
What's new in Java for Mac OS X 2017-001: This package is exclusively intended for support of legacy software and installs the same deprecated version of Java 6 included in the 2015-001, 2014-001, and 2013-005 releases. Even after upgrading to the latest version of Java, while running some applications on macOS Sierra (10.12), El Capitan (OS X 10.11), or Yosemite (OS X 10.10), users see a dialog box prompting to download Java.
